Choices, circumstances, years
Life expectancy84
That is an average of everybody. Smokers and non-smokers. Every state at once. A death at 40 and a death at 100, added together and halved. It is the only number most calculators give you.
It comes from the US death rate tables. Used without averaging, those tables show how many years each part of a life is worth: the things you choose, and the things you were born into.
