The problem isn't that AI will replace you. It's that it's already changing how you think, and the change is hard to notice until something important is on the line.

TechnologyMy first instinct when I sat down to write this was to open the model and let it take a pass at the argument. I caught myself halfway through the prompt and closed the tab. It's a reflex.
The same one that has me opening Maps before I've even looked up to see where I am.
I rely on GPS for almost everything now. I can get to places I go regularly, but ask me to describe the route and I struggle. The landmarks don't stick the way they used to. Not because I've been somewhere fewer times, but because I stopped paying attention the moment I had something paying attention for me.
That's the version of this I keep thinking about. Not the dramatic replacement story. Something quieter: the slow loss of something you didn't notice you were building until you need it.
A large language model is trained on the aggregated record of everything already written, published, and said. By design it converges toward the center of that distribution, weighted toward what came before. It is extraordinarily good at producing the answer the corpus already knew. The C+ answer. The synthesis of existing thinking, rendered fast and confident and clean.
What it cannot produce is the answer that isn't in the corpus yet. The reframe nobody has written down because nobody has seen the problem from that angle. The insight that lives at the edge of a domain rather than its center. When you prompt first, you get a very good version of what's already been thought. The edges don't show up when you're averaging what's already been said.
Before these tools existed, producing something required enough effort that the effort itself forced clearer thinking. You had to know what you were trying to say before you could say it. Now you can generate a polished work product without ever fully thinking through the problem, and it's hard to tell the difference until it matters.
The ability to sit with a problem before reaching for a solution isn't natural. It's trained. You develop it by being in situations where the quick answer was wrong enough times that you learned to slow down, where you had to form a view before anyone handed you one, where the work of thinking was not optional.
That process builds something specific: taste. The ability to look at a piece of work and feel where it's weak before anyone tells you. To recognize when a framing is clean versus when it just sounds confident. To know, in your gut, whether an answer is actually good or just well-structured.
Taste is what separates someone who can use a powerful tool from someone who just produces output with it.
The risk isn't that the model produces bad work. It usually doesn't. The risk is that if you hand it the problem before you've thought about the problem, you never develop a strong view of your own to test against what comes back. You become a good editor of the model's ideas rather than a thinker who uses the model to pressure-test your own. Those are different skills and they compound differently over time.
The uncomfortable version of this: if you can't articulate what's wrong with the model's answer, you probably aren't in a position to improve on it. You're just adjusting it.
The obvious pushback: the model shows you framings and angles you'd never have reached alone. It expands your thinking rather than constraining it. That's true, as far as it goes. GPS also gets you places you'd never have found on your own. The question isn't whether the tool is useful. The question is what you stop building when the tool removes the need to build it.
Whether the habit of independent thinking can coexist with tools this capable, or whether it quietly atrophies the way any sense of direction does when you haven't needed it in years, I don't think anyone knows yet. The tools haven't been ubiquitous long enough for the downstream effects to show up in the data.
What I do think is that the person who figures out how to use these tools without outsourcing the thinking is going to have an advantage that compounds.
The model can get you to C+, fast, every time.
Getting to A requires having something to say that isn't already in the corpus. And having something to say requires thinking first.
That's the bet worth making.
Epilogue
The intern comparison comes up constantly now. Cheap to run, great for a first pass, useful for covering ground quickly. Most of the time it comes back with something worth working from.
But a good intern tells you when they're uncertain. They flag what they don't know. They look confused when they're confused. The model never does that. It renders every answer with the same confidence regardless of whether it's right. The first draft and the hallucination come out looking identical.
That's what makes it a bad intern. I can calibrate for an intern's blind spots because they signal them. The model's blind spots look exactly like its strengths. Knowing which is which requires the judgment to check. And the judgment to check is exactly what atrophies when you prompt first.
